Tamara Ketabgian, a well respected critic that graduated from Indiana University, examined the connections between romance and science fiction in the works of The Invisible Man and The Wonderful Visit. H.G. Wells mixes scientific and spiritual elements in these novels. Ketabgian states that the scientific and spiritual elements contrast each other very well and create a unique style of writing. This is one of the main reasons that critics gave Wells such great reviews when it came to these novels. While these stories don’t necessarily resolve readers speculations, it adds to their interest. Because the books don’t give the readers the answers they are looking for, it pushes their minds further and gets them thinking deeper. This keeps readers engaged in Wells books. For this reason, Wells Books challenge readers to wonder what is really possible. He took the normally perceived world and made something new. He changed the way that people viewed the world and added his own perception. Critics love this about Wells because it introduced a new style of writing into the world of literature. Wells took his imagination to a whole other level and the critics praise him for that. Wells paved the way for other science fiction authors. success in their future endeavors. link.gale.com/apps/doc/H1420008480/LitRC?u=coal19787&sid=bookmark-LitRC&xid=1919d2a3.

Catholic Crusher

Many of Wells articles and his views on Catholicism have caused problems for Ireland.  A lot of Wells books were popular in Ireland at first because they were translated into Irish Gaelic. Many of Wells articles and his views on Catholicism have caused problems for Ireland.  A lot of Wells books were popular in Ireland at first because they were translated into Irish Gaelic. It is stated that, “His statements in 1939 on the nature and tole of the Catholic Church in Ireland that had the widest and the most vocal reception.” This shows how popular Wells really was in Ireland. His articles on nature and the Catholic Church had many people talking about him. Many people had problems with Wells views on Catholicism and did not agree with him. This raised many problems in Ireland including the Picture Post, a magazine published in the United Kingdom from 1938 to 1957, being banned in late 1939 for around three months. Allegedly it was banned due to Wells articles and the controversy it caused. This caused many critics to talk. One of Wells best critics from University College Cork was Alfred O’Rahilly. O’Rahilly had one of the strongest opinions on this. For this reason, O’Rahilly’s response to the articles, that led for Picture Post to be banned, was a significant representation of the Catholicism in Irish politics. This critic practically shaped how Irish Nationalists typically viewed Wells. link.gale.com/apps/doc/HRNQLZ278686206/LitRC?u=coal19787&sid=bookmark-LitRC&xid=6aee0e44

The War of Wells

When Wells wrote The War of the Worlds many authors criticized him at first for writing a book with science fiction and romance. Him combining these two completely different genres was not appreciated until after his death. Critic, William Scheick noted that this is the book that made him fall in love with Well’s ideas. When Wells wrote the novel, War of The Worlds, he used a loving brother’s desire to protect his brother to portray the adventure of the story. He used romance to create the adventure throughout his many books. Readers became invested in the relationship of Surrey and his younger brother in The War of the Worlds. He used this relationship to convey the decisions that Surrey made throughout this book while the aliens invaded southern England. He used romance also in his prior book such as in The Time Machine when the Time Traveler fell in love with a woman from a different place in time. This added more excitement into the book. Also, using romance with science fiction is getting people who like both types of genres to read Wells novels. Another criticism, Scheick acknowledges is the overlooking of the use of romance in his books until after Well’s death. Authors took his creations of literature and still use the blend of science fiction and romance. Readers finally understood the importance of the romance in relation to the adventures. The adventures that took place in his novels were all because of Well’s use of love and close-knit relationships throughout them. He took the idea of science fiction and added romance to make his own unique and greatly appreciated writing style. link.gale.com/apps/doc/A641058739/LitRC?u=coal19787&sid=bookmark-LitRC&xid=470c749c

When Wells first created a short story, it caused a lot of controversy. Back in the day, there was a lot of criticisms on short stories. Critics would say that short stories were the same as anecdotal stories. They did not think that short stories could tell a full story while being creative. The difference between short stories and anecdotes caused a lot of problems when it came to Wells short story. People didn't believe that it  deserved the recognition because it didn’t meet the “standard”. Your short story being viewed as an anecdote was historically negative. People continued to criticize Wells about his short stories. This caused self doubt when no one would read his stories. Wells made the decision to write novels and no longer short stories.  Many people and critics didn’t even purchase or read the short story from Wells. Critics didn’t see all of the creativity in the short story, all because they viewed it as an anecdote. They took away Wells hard work because of the negative view of it being too short. This created a fire for Well’s imagination to write the best novels he possibly could. He wrote some of his greatest works after giving up on short stories to pursue his science fiction genre. After his novels gained attention, readers fell in love with Well’s short stories. He finally got the recognition for those stories he deserved. link.gale.com/apps/doc/H1420125667/LitRC?u=coal19787&sid=bookmark-LitRC&xid=950201f5
